When it comes to weight loss foods, some popular names like Daliya, cornflakes, whole foods, and a moong dal snack come to mind. If you ask me, one of my personal favourite foods is moong dal snacks. They are very popular also for Indian lunches, dinners, and breakfasts.
The reason is moong dal is enriched in fibre & protein and both nutrients aid in weight loss efforts. That’s why I also love moong dal so much. You can make a lot of dishes using moong dal.
There are several moong dal snacks if you see one, but one of my favourites is Chaunka. Yes, in the UP, India, we call it Chaunka. It can be made with both chickpea flour or soaked grind moong dal/moong dal flour.
This moong dal snack is very fulfilling and you will not feel hungry the whole day. I have attached pictures of the recipe to let you understand it in detail. Try it if you’re trying to eat healthy & cut calories.
Moong Dal Nutrition
You must be knowing that Moong dal is very good for weight loss. The reason is that the abundance of protein and fibre makes moong dal an ideal healthy choice for weight loss.
According to the popular USDA data on nutrition, every 100 grams of moong dal has 16 grams of fibre and 24 grams of protein (ref). Protein keeps you full all day while fibre has other health benefits, including weight loss.
Moong dal is called the healthiest dal among other pulses. Because it’s very light and more nutritious as compared to other Dals.

Moong Dal Snack Chaunka Recipe
#1. First of all, we need to grind the overnight-soaked moong dal. So rinse the water and wash it.
#2. You have to grind it now. Put green chilli & ginger in a mixer grinder. Grind the soaked moong dal.
#3. Take it out in a bowl and add salt and Heeng. Add veggies, green chilli, tomatoes, dhania, green peas, grated carrot & capsicum. You can take other seasonal vegetables too.
#4. Mix it well by adding some water. Continue beating it. The batter should neither be thick nor very diluted.
#5. Place it aside for 5-10 mins. Now, put some oil in the frying pan so that it doesn’t get sticky on the pan.
#6. Heat the oil. Add rai and jeera. Let it fry. Pour the batter into the pan. Add some water.
#7. Now, cook it and don’t leave it alone. You need to constantly keep on spooning until cooked well. It should be thick enough to set on a plate. Then you consider that it has cooked well.
#8. Now garnish the plate with butter or 2-3 drops of oil. Now, you need to spread the cooked dough on a plate.
#9. Let it set well on the plate and leave it for 15 mins till it becomes cold.
#10. Now cut it into pieces and serve it. You can also shallow fry it, eat it like that only or add some chutney or salad for garnishing.
