Is idli Good for Weight Loss?
Because we’re talking about healthy weight loss, and clean eating here, first you should know how & if idli is good for weight loss.
Let me explain in easy language.
Yes, idli is good for weight loss because it has zero oil or a very less amount of oil. The cooking method makes it an unprocessed & healthy food.
But how much it would contribute to your weight loss efforts depends upon the ingredients you use in making idli. Some people use rice flour, some others use lentils and semolina which we also call Rava Idli.
If you use rice flour, it’s still healthy but lentils are better for Idli batter if you’re seriously into weight loss.
In today’s recipe, I am going to use Rava/Suji. You can also take 3 or 2 lentils along with some rice flour keeping them in equal proportions (lentil Idli batter recipe in the Idli Batter Recipe section of the article).
I love both versions of it. But because I ate lentil dhokla yesterday, I will use Rava in my idli recipe today.
Nutrients & Calories
Rava is enriched in iron, protein & fibre, magnesium and vitamin B (1). Rava also has a low glycemic index (2). And we know that food low in the glycemic index may help increase weight loss.
Protein keeps you fulfilled all day long and fibre contributes to weight loss.
In each 100 gm of Suji, there is 358 cal (3). Therefore, you can eat it as a weight-loss snack. But remember, don’t use butter, or fry it. My Idli recipe is free from fats & oils, however full of vegetables. So, you can definitely take it as a weight-loss healthy snack.
Calories in 1 piece of Idli
It’s about 33-35 calories if you make idli at home. And if you use butter or buy ready-made idli it can have up to 70-80 calories per piece.
I recommend you to make it at home to eat clean and healthy and promote weight loss. This weight loss Idli recipe is easy to make and super tasty. You will get the goodness of vegetables as well.
Idli Batter Recipe

- ⅓ Bowl curd/Dahi
- 1 spoon Eno
- Salt to the taste
Weight loss Idli batter recipe
For Rava idli, you don’t need to prepare anything in advance. But if you wish to use Dal & Rice as ingredients for making Idli batter, there are two ways.
First, you need to purchase or get dal & rice flour. Or the second & better way is to soak the Dal/lentils & rice overnight.
You need to take 2 servings of spoon rice, 1 serving of spoon Chana Daal, 1 serving of spoon Moong Dal, and ½ serving of spoon Urad Dal.
One more twist here is that if you don’t want to take rice because of losing weight, take each Dal/lentil mentioned above in equal proportions.
In the morning, you rinse the water, wash it with water and grind all the Dals/lentils in a grinder. The wet flour is ready. For the Idli batter recipe. Take all the flour in one big bowl. Add water, Dahi, Eno, and salt to it.
It’s time to beat it around for 5 mins. The more you beat it, the better it becomes for fermentation. The maximum time you can take is 10 mins.
Now put it aside for another 10 mins.
Making of Weight Loss Idli
At this moment in time, steam or boil the corn. It will take a few minutes. Now, chop or crush your favourite seasonal vegetables. I am asking you to take only seasonal because it would make your weight loss Idli more tasty & healthy.
Meanwhile, your Idli batter is set & ready for steam cooking. Grease the Idli maker and place the batter in it. Again it will take around 10 minutes to make Idlis.
Making of Corn Vegetable Salad
For now, you need to utilise these 10 minutes again to prepare the salad.
Ingredients
- Seasonal vegetables of your choice
- 1 tsp oil
- Corn
- 1 tsp apple vinegar or lemon juice
- Sweet pudina apple chutney or tomato sauce
Recipe
In vegetables, I have taken chopped onion, green chilli, tomato, and crushed carrot. Now, check the corn, they must have become ready for saute.
Put the oil on the pan and pan on heat. Let it heat. Put corn and all the vegetables in the pan thereafter. You can see this in the video above.
You don’t need to fry it, because you are going to saute it. Add sauce or any sweet chutney for a sweet texture, then apple vinegar for a tangy taste.
Also, add black pepper or red chilli powder for taste along with the salt. After, 5 minutes, switch off the Gas stove. Your corn vegetable Salad is ready.
